Reasons to get married during weekdays and why to avoid Saturdays & Sundays part nine
Anyone who knows Italian roads, rules (or lack of them) and Italian transportation systems will know what I am talking about here. Traffic and public transportation on Saturdays/Sundays and particularly public holidays should be avoided like the plague. Roads are blocked, trains run late and buses can be jam packed to the doors. Think about a week day for your wedding, and you immediately have less chance of traffic problems and running late because of them.
Reasons to get married during weekdays and why to avoid Saturdays & Sundays part six
Public church/religious ceremony schedules are naturally heavier during the weekends. Priests, Churches and Civil ceremony grounds are extremely busy on Saturdays and Sundays and usually take on double bookings. This means often you can be (diplomatically) rushed out of a church/religious location after your service, as another ceremony is waiting to start. Choosing a weekeday avoids this problem and also gives you more chance of finding your first choice of Church or Religious venue grounds.
Reasons to get married during weekdays and why to avoid Saturdays & Sundays part four
There are more and cheaper flights available. This isn’t as silly as it sounds. Especially for those who are looking for flight availability on the low cost airlines like Easyjet, Ryanair and Flybaboo. Flight schedules with these airlines are often operated Monday – Friday, and during these days great flight deals can be found. It is important to consider this especially for your guests, who will be travelling, to help them also keep costs down.
Reasons to get married during weekdays and why to avoid Saturdays & Sundays part three
Larger suppliers like florists, musicians and caterers that have the capacity to take on more than one booking during one day, are less likely to have double bookings during the week. Whilst this is not to say that when there is a double booking on your wedding day, your level of service is anything less than 110%, it just means that during the week you will are more likely to get 200% undivided attention.
A thousand flowers in one promise – Armando Malafronte
Locally and Internationally famed, Ravello Floral designer, Armando Malafronte recently reached a new level of success in the publishing of his divine book.
Armando “A magical floral designer capable of realizing magnificent floral creations”, recently released his first book ‘Mille fiori in una promessa’. The book, enriched with fabulous colours and floral compositions, leaves you with an inspiration and admiration for flower design that is hard to find elsewhere. It is nothing but a true reflection and appraisal of this man’s unique talent and incredible green fingers.
You think you are ugly.
Why is it that us girls have to wait till we get old and wrinkled to realise how beautiful we were? Anyway, you think you are ugly and there is nothing I can say or do to change that. You can however adapt your wedding outfit to conceal to be your worst points and accentuate your best points. It’s all about balance. For example;
You don’t like your face?
Wear a nineteen twenties box hat or a broach hair slide with a short net covering half your face. The broach can be a beautiful focal point. If you have a long neck, wear long chandelier ears, which will again draw attention away from your face.
You have flabby arms?
Flabby arms but your shoulders are your best feature? You wear something off shoulder with off shoulder drapery sleeves (1970s) or carry a delicious shawl.
You are very short?
You need a short twinkly wedding dress with slinky shoes and your hair should be worn up.
Why do Italians seem so rude?
From Rome down, Italians can be quite rude as seen from an English cultural position. It’s the great cultural divide that I married into. Italians do not like to decorate their requests and acknowledgments with pleases and thank yous. Especially if they are your friends (or work in public service.) Between friends they find it too formal and if you say thank you to a good Neapolitan friend, they will reply that there is no need for a formal thank you. They believe thank you and please are too formal for good friends who understand each other. When in Italy their apparent rudeness is just due to cultural differences so try not to take it personally.
How to order food like an Italian in Italy.
Basic Rules: Part 02
8.Ask for recommendations; Italians love giving their opinions on just about everything, but food questions will be tackled with the seriousness of a political debate. “what would you recommend?” works better than “what is good?” “Everything is good!” they will reply, like I said tread lightly food is serious business.
9.Most Italians (especially in South Italy) will have; anti-pasta, pasta, secondo, fruita, dolce and café. If you want to try so much food once in your life I recommend you don’t eat too much pasta and avoid the bread. Or you may just pop.
10.Never ever in your whole life, even if your life depends on it order a cappuccino after a big meal. Everybody in the place, who is Italian, will naturally assume that you are foreign and “don’t understand anything about food.” Unfortunately they have brainwashed me and I too now believe that milk after fish is not so hot.
1.Look for places filled with locals and ask about dishes you see passing by.
2.Try to always order local wine and often house wine which can be home made wine. It’s a little rough round the edges and lighter in alcohol but once you get the taste for it there is no going back. Especially since the price is right and the hangover is low key.
How to order food like an Italian in Italy.
Basic Rules: Part 01
1.The shorter the menu the more likely you are to get good quality fresh food.
2.The more dishes offered with ingredients, which are in season, the better the food will be.
3. In Italy ingredients, which are frozen have to be indicated on the menu, so look out for those little stars on the right.
4.Water is always ordered at the beginning of the meal, a lightly fizzy is recommended to clean the palate especially if you will be eating rich food.
5.If you start with fish or meat, you should stick with the theme or have lemon sorbet between courses.
6.Avoid anything labelled tourist menu or you will end up with fish fingers for your main.
7. It’s good to know what different areas are famous for e.g. Naples has mozzarella, Rome the Amatriciana, Tuscany has it’s Fiorentina and Genova has pesto. But these are just the obvious, Italians can be so passionate about their way of making a certain pasta that they will talk about the people in the next town who don’t know how to cook because they add onions. They will discuss these onion lovers as though they come from a far off land.
Bridal Beauty Emergency Plan Strategy Four: The Beautician Part four
What to order?
A few days before:
1.Full body polish
This treatment will leave you with a glossy, smooth and soft skin. It involves; a wash, a steam, a salt rub, a rinse and a rub with oil. If you want to try a home version, mix half a cup of coarse salt with half a cup of your favourite massage oil. Good oils to use are grape seed oil and almond oil. First you soak in a hot bath for ten minutes, to soften dead skin, then wash your skin with a good cleanser. Now rub your oil & salt mixture all over your body. Pay special attention to trouble areas like elbows, bottoms and feet. Rinse well with warm water and if you have very dry skin apply more oil.
Bridal Beauty Emergency Plan Strategy One: DIET– part ten
Metabolism Stimulating Diet
A Word on Dieting Tablets:
Just don’t go there! They make you moody, emotional and in the long run they destroy your metabolism. So one day when you eventually have to stop them or you loose a kidney, you will have no metabolism and have no hope of ever getting to the right weight. Trust me on this; any metabolism stimulating and appetite suppressing drugs bought in the pharmacy are no different to amphetamines they sell in discos around the world. They will not keep you thin since the second you stop taking them you will be hungrier than you have ever been before and with a huge new tendency to put on weight. And if they don’t destroy your body they will make you so irritable that everybody will hate you. Enough said.
Bridal Beauty Emergency Plan – Strategy One : DIET– part four
Metabolism Stimulating Diet
If we have our carbohydrates for breakfast, we need to stock up on proteins during the other two main meals. So lunch and dinner you will eat baked, boiled, steamed or grilled proteins with loads of fresh fruit and vegetables. Proteins are eggs, beans, nuts, meat, fish, chicken and hard cheeses. They are essential for increasing muscle mass. The higher your muscle mass the more fat you burn. A telltale sign of bad dieting is a thin person who is bone and fat with their skin hanging off their body. Proteins are essential for reshaping your body. Limit salt, oils, fats and dairy. Except for low fat live yogurts. Make chicken, fish, tofu, beans or lentils tasty with spices. Eat your fruit first and wait fifteen minutes, this will ensure minimum absorption of fat.
Bridal Beauty Emergency Plan – Strategy One : DIET– part one
Metabolism Stimulating Diet
Say the word diet to me and I instantly get hungry. I am just not one for sacrifice. I prefer to add things than to take them away. I do feel quite an expert in the field of dieting. I have lost and gained more kilograms than I care to share with you. I know drastic diets defeat themselves; they actually make you fat, especially when they starve you. They make your hair and skin look awful. So my diet is quite free and healthy. The key principle is metabolism stimulation with increased quantities of nourishing food. Being healthy makes you not only look your sexiest and most beautiful, it makes you feel it to.
Changing who we are and retouching
If you ask us to completely change the way you look in your wedding pictures, you better be prepared for a long debate. It is my opinion that it will be very sad to completely change the way you look. One day, when you look back at those pictures of “you”, you will wonder what you really looked like and you will have no record of who you were. I am not talking about teeth whitening, skin clearing or wing clipping, I am talking about short, dark, overweight girls who want to be tall, fair and skinny. While this can sometimes be difficult (especially when they are marrying a tall, fair, skinny guy) it’s not impossible with Photoshop. But how sad if the only real element of you in the portrait will be your insecurities.
A very subjective and overly simplified summary of the evolution of wedding photography – part four
All of a sudden everybody who worked in the wedding industry realised wedding photography was the place to be. Everybody who ever had the vaguest interest in wedding photography bought a camera and started shooting weddings. I even know a waiter who decided it was time to open a photography studio on the Amalfi coast. These new photographers charge ridiculously low prices to make up for their lack of experience. Have you ever been caught by those signs outside restaurants in Venice, “Tourist Menu?” If you have, you will know they offer you a five course meal for five euro. And how do you think that meal will taste?
Then came the economic crisis and well the party was closed down. The bandwagon broke from being over loaded with photographers.
A very subjective and overly simplified summary of the evolution of wedding photography – part two
After Joe Buissink revolutionised the whole wedding world, we all jumped on a very comfortable bandwagon. All of a sudden wedding photography was not so frowned upon, mostly because it was so lucrative. Everybody did and everybody wanted only reportage.
Crazy women all over the world were paying ridiculous amounts of money to have the photographer of their choice shoot their wedding, even if it meant flying them in. The destination-wedding photographer was born. Brides began saying things like, “from the minute I saw their pictures I knew they were the one, and I could have no one else”. Brides began to select their wedding photographers as carefully as they selected their husbands. Wedding photography became a priority for the wedding budget. And many destination-wedding photographers still lead the life of rock stars; flying all over the world to party and make huge amounts of cash at the same time.
What every Bride really wants on her wedding day – part one
Each and every time a bride has ever had a nuclear melt down it has been because she did not like something about her appearance. She may have tried to cover up seeking a scapegoat like the colour of the flowers but nearly always it’s because of insecurity.
Brides fantasise about how they will look down to the finest details. In fantasies things can be perfect and in reality they cannot. Naturally this nearly leads to great disappointment. Every bride, even if she will not admit it, wants to be perfectly beautiful.

“Mamma Agata” – cooking school – Ravello
Mamma Agata was voted the number one thing to do on the Amalfi coast by “Tripadvisor”. “Tripadvisor” is a site which rates travel services purely on public ratings.
“Mamma Agata” is like a character out of an Italian art movie. Chiara & “Mamma Agata” run a fun cooking school for anyone who wants to better their Italian cuisine techniques. They have also published their first cookbook, which means you can take home these culinary spells. They are delightful and full of juicy titbits to enrich your visit to Ravello. One has the impression that they adore sharing their kitchen with new visitors.
Italians are a tribe of pleasure seekers and their number one drug of choice is food. Mamma Agata’s cooking school is about more than just cooking; it’s about pleasure too. Oh and they also do intimate weddings for clients who share their choice of pleasure.

Wedding Photography in Italy – part two
Australian and American wedding photographers are exploring all sorts of new ways to go about wedding photography. Some of the best reportage wedding photographers in the world come from Italy. Italian photographers are masters of technique but they are a little resistant to change and new ideas. We are yet to see new and original ideas that push the boundaries a bit. Hang in there they are coming soon to an Italian Wedding Photographer near you.
If I have offended any Italian wedding photographer, I apologise and humbly request you have a look at the winning pictures on the “International Society for Professional Wedding Photographers”. Then I hope you will feel stimulated instead of irritated. And you will note there are a few Italians among them, though always doing reportage.
Wedding Photography in Italy – part one
Firstly I want to make it quite clear that Italian wedding photographers are the best in the world. The below, in no way disputes this fact, I know what a touchy bunch artists are. All clear? Good. (Please don’t slash my car tyres.)
I hate to say it, but during the eighties and nineties wedding photography in Italy was really scary or at best, embarrassing. You can see the after effects of the torture inflicted in the eyes of young Italian couples. “PLEASE, no posing,” they beg. So naturally everybody flung themselves onto the other side of the scales. Reportage is the only style most Italian photographers and clients want to see. There are very few who are mixing reportage with fashion and portraiture photography.
What makes JoAnne Dunn Photographers Different?
They treat each wedding they way they would treat a commercial assignment. We seek direction from the client and do not limit ourselves to only one style of photography. The couple are sent a form about a week before their wedding. This will be their brief to us describing their vision and fancies. Each wedding is approached individually to make sure the results are as individual as our clients. After the wedding we send you around nine hundred great pictures to choose from. You send us your choices and we create your album. We then put the album on line for you to approve. The clients are involved in the creative process and their album creation from beginning to the end. JoAnne Dunn Photographer’s are different because they understand their clients are all different and want different things. We are different because we put your vision before our own.
Posing for Bridal Boudoir Photography – part 02
Practise, practise, practise makes perfect. They day of the shoot is the wrong day to try out new poses. You need to keep a scarp book of poses you like, taking into consideration your complexes.
What exactly is good posture? Well we are not talking about the posture you do in finishing school. Bottom and breasts out, tummy in and head lift as though it’s been pulled by a cord at the base of the neck. Nearly everybody benefits from lifting their chin a little, it removes annoying double chins.
Posing for Bridal Boudoir Photography – part 01
When I was a young struggling photographer, I earned a little cash on the side by doing portfolios for strippers in London. They taught me so much about posing. The most important thing I learnt was about posture. There is not a single thing which will improve your looks as quickly as standing correctly.
Stretching your body and accentuating the S shape of your body will pull your curves into position. It will also smooth out lumps and bumps.
Very few humans have breasts which look good dangling down when you are on all fours. Maybe if you are wearing a push up bra it could work but if you are naked they tend to look silly. Instead lie on your tummy, support yourself on your elbows , bend your knees and cross your ankles. This is a very flattering pose and modest too.
Advice for a speech – part one
Do not under any circumstances get your speech off the internet. I beg you, I have heard the same stuff over and over. It’s embarrassing. If you are not good with words or humour, try a funny slideshow or do a video. You can use old funny photographs or interview other people about the couple. And you will have a special gift to give the couple afterwards.
A master of ceremonies
What often happens to me at a weddings is that I get told by the priest to get everybody out of the church because mass is about to start, so I shoo them all outside. In the nicest possible way but no matter how nicely a stranger bosses you about, it’s annoying. Then we go to the cocktails and the staff tell me dinner is served and I have to herd everybody to the hall. By this stage everybody has decided I am a witch from hell. Between the herding and the thirty six deep group list the bride gave me, everybody hates me by dinner. And it’s not my fault and it’s very bad for pictures when everybody hates me.
If there is a master of ceremonies he or she can boss everybody around and no one will mind because that is what he is supposed to do. Which just leaves me the problem of the thirty six groups to do in half and hour.
Capturing Romance without being cheesy – part one
My instructions to a couple when we begin their portraits is to try and ignore us. The more you are focusing on the feelings between the two of you the better the pictures will be. Sure there are couples who freeze like rabbits staring into headlights and those I have to help along. I find a little liquor helps, especially the boys.
I also find a few laughs and giggles work. Once again we can see how important it is that you really like and get on with your photographer. Nothing worse that not sharing the sense of humour of your photographer and cringing every time they open their mouths.
Having Fun …
Another element which is absolutely essential when creating sensational wedding images is fun. If you feel like you are being tortured you will look like you are being tortured. Happy ugly people having fun are a lot more beautiful than miserable ugly people hating every minute of it. I know this sounds quite rude but I just want to make a point. So many perfectly gorgeous brides say I hate having my picture taken. So many things I don’t like about myself. Now I am really going to get hardcore.
“GET OVER IT ALREADY”. You are young, healthy, in love and able to afford a wedding. So you are not Kate Moss. Unfortunately you will only realise how gorgeous you are today when you really get old and ugly. And then you will wish you had not wasted so much time on nonsense and had more fun.
Creativity – the special zone – part 02
A feeling of complicity and mutual respect between all participants is also essential when embarking on a creative journey. Without trust you are going no where. For example sometimes creativity requires being silly or having the freedom to cry. Creativity is so self revealing, intimate, free, risky and down right scary. How on earth could one even imagine taking part if you do not trust all the people involved. Often it is much easier to shoot artists and creatives because they understand the process and know they have to let me in. Creatives would have already decided if I would be the kind of person they could “play” with. Because creativity is the act of play. All the most interesting pictures come from people willing the play. And have fun doing so.
Creativity – the special zone – part 01
Creativity is such a mysterious and sacred thing. A little like a butterfly if you try to hold or control it, you will most likely damage or destroy it. Only when you sit calmly, will it come and rest quietly on your shoulder. Creativity is the act of play. Children are so good at creativity because they are not usually victims of worry and high expectations. They live in the moment. Not thinking how things should be but rather rejoicing in how things are. The number one ingredient is learning to live in the present. Spending your time in your past or future completely ruins the creative process. You need to be present to be creative.

Lighting the dance floor
There is nothing that improves dancing pictures more than disco lights, other than alcohol that is. The more lights and colours the better the pictures will be. Smoke machines, remember those, make for great atmosphere and even better pictures. One of my all time favourite after parties had one of those thoroughly terrific eighties disco dance floors. Mirror balls and ultra-violet lights all help with that party vibe. Basically the more lights and colours, the better the pictures and ultimately the party.
Some more frequently asked questions – part 03
Do you have insurance to cover the cost of re-taking photos in case anything goes wrong?
No – no photographer in Italy will provide you with this type of Insurance. Due to many insurance scams, particularly in South Italy, this kind of insurance is rarely offered or ridiculously expensive. We have a legally binding contract, which upholds us to all of our promises.
Some more frequently asked questions – part 01
If we hire you will you personally take the photos on the day? Is it just you or do you have an assistant?
It depends which photographer you book. You can choose to book me, Gianni or Francesco, and then that person will be the photographer to show up on the day. Dependent on the package you choose, each photographer is nearly always provided also with a trained and shooting assistant (only the mini packages are 1 photographer only)
Having your teeth whitened

If you drink loads of tea and coffee or smoke, whitening you teeth is a very good idea. Just remember that for two days after the cleaning, your teeth (ironically) are very susceptible to staining, especially from coffee and red wine. SO I recommend doing it at least one week before your wedding. Whitened teeth can also be too white, a week’s space will give them a chance to look a little more natural.
Ideas on ways to save without anyone noticing – part 01
1.Choosing the right flowers.
Orchids may be beautiful but since most are imported they are very expensive. By choosing flowers that are in season and indigenous, you will save heaps.
2.Don’t buy bridal shoes
Like photography, anything labelled “Bridal”, it instantly get much more expensive. Choosing silver or glittery evening sandals can save you quite a bit.
3.booking flights months ahead of time
If you book your flights months ahead of the actual date you want to travel, you can end up paying more for taxes than the actual flight especially when flying in Europe
Introducing Kim

Kim is my star pupil. Perhaps after working for me so long and seeing nearly every picture we ever shot, she has a natural affinity for our style of photography. After three years of intensive training, she has amazed the old timers among us. Sometimes it’s hard to break professional photographers out of the restrictions they impose on their work. Kim’s work is fresh and lacks those dull traditional images. Almost invisible and very sensitive, she captures the most precious moments without disturbing the moment. Kim is also one of the kindest and lovely humans I have ever met.
Introducing Paul
Paul – joins Joanne Dunn Photography for the first time, heading into the 2010 season. With years of photography training and wedding experience in the U.K, Paul’s timelessly photojournalistic approach suits all brides and grooms looking for timeless images. With a quiet humour and true charisma, Paul works unobtrusively and attentively to capture every magic moment and emotion.
Introducing Tommaso

Tommaso – is highly regarded in both the Italian Photography and Videography field. Based for years in the stylish Cava di Tirreni, Tommaso joined Joanne Dunn Photographers in 2008 for a hand in photography outside the square. With his effortless charm and attention, Tomassso has built a remarkable reputation in reportage photography. An English-speaking assistant always accompanies Tomasso.
Wedding in Naples
The saying goes see Naples and die. After the book Gomorrah I think a lot of people were put off coming to Naples but I am the wrong person to ask since I am South Africa. Johannesburg makes Naples seem quite tame. Tame it’s not, but well worth visiting. And although I usually dread the weddings in Naples because of the chaos, they have some of the most beautiful churches I have ever seen. They also have amazing venues and the price is right. But it is a crazy place, you can’t run around flashing your gold Rolex and not expect at least a good hard slap. Either you love Naples or you hate it. I like it in doses and I would only go in with someone who knows were they are going. One can end up in dodgy neighbourhoods without even trying. Who gets married in Naples? Italians who were born there and love the place but a man with an artistic bride might see it’s chaotic beauty. And again come to me for reliable contacts for Naples wedding planners.
Wedding in Puglia
I have only done two weddings in Puglia but I have to say I was very impressed. The towns and landscapes are gorgeous. The sea is a startling colour and things are fairly priced. Easy to get to because of the Bari airport. Both weddings I did were held at Masseras (which is an old farm estate). The architecture is wonderfully simple and graphic. Hinting to Greek and North Africa architecture. I found the people to be very friendly and on both occasions there was not a hitch in organisation or service. If you would like to put in contact with an Italian wedding planner who does weddings in Puglia just contact us.
Wedding in Ravello
After having worked in almost all of Italy, I decided I wanted to settle in Ravello. The reason is simple, I think it’s the most beautiful place in the world. It’s half village half garden, suspended in the sky over looking the sea from mountain cliffs. It’s safe, with no cars, just steps and it has the most beautiful colours all year round. The spring is filled with cherry blossoms and fire flies. Summer has many flowers, music and balmy nights, Autumn is a flame with reds and oranges . Winter has a magic solitude which sparkles in silvers and blues. I can write endless sonnets but you would still have no idea of how beautiful the place is.
Wedding in Tuscany
After the book (and movie) under a Tuscan Sun, Tuscany as become even more popular. It’s romantic, rustic and the food is some of the best in the world. You will find it a hard task to have a bad meal or drink bad wine. The weather is very hot but the atmosphere and style is very individual. Tuscany really responds well to being shot in black and white. Tuscany is perfect though a little mild for my taste. The Tuscan people are lovely people like fresh warm bread. The salami, truffles, cheese, steak, and wine are all world famous. I also believe that the prices are very competitive compared to the rest of Italy. I recommend hiring a huge villa with garden and swimming pool, it will be cheaper than many hotel rooms.
Thinking about getting married in Italy?
Why do so many foreign couples get married in Italy. The weather is good, the food is great, the cities and villages are gorgeous, weddings are a big tradition in Italy, it’s a very romantic place and besides it’s a great weeder when it comes to the invitation list. The Italian government has gone as far as possible to simplify the process of getting married in Italy. With such a variety of locations and landscapes to choose from. From the classic Venice to the unexplored Puglia, it all depends what you are after. Dreamy, crazy, glamorous to rustic and earthy, you can have it all when you get married in italy.
A Message to Guests – the case of the poor wedding photographer – part 02
So I know we don’t feel like it on the day or maybe you just feel like you don’t look good in pictures. Non of us like the way we look in pictures. But believe me in twenty years time you will think you look fabulous. The photographer is not trying to take your picture and sell in on the black market. No they want to do their job as best they can in very limited time. So if you are mean or impatient with a photographer you will probably get your wish and not be photographed, but on behalf of the you that will exist in twenty years time. “Give us all a break!”
A Message to Guests – the case of the poor wedding photographer – part 01
Now we all hate wedding photographers. They are a pain on the day, bossing everybody around and telling cheesey jokes. They are often funny looking and nerdish and generally not considered fun. We do however want to see good pictures after we have not allowed them to photograph us.
I would like to build a case for the poor wedding photographer right around the world. Wedding photography is one of the hardest forms of photography. Your subjects are often not modesl, stressed, unco and uncooperative. You have very limited time and that is nearly always made even less on the day because clients run late. Guests with cameras often get in the way, the priest does not want to see you, it rains, you have to cover for the planner, they forget to feed and water you… you are expected to get result like images in magazines, images which require hours of work, you are expected to accomplish in half an hour.
My favourite locations 15: Castellamare Bikini
Into pulp? Want something really Italian but a little kitsch and atypical? Try Bikini, complete with a little fake island with two palms. I think if you go Italian cocktail chic and make your theme colour gold this venue could rock. If you go classic romantic you will look silly here but if you do super polished gangster chic. It could work but you would need to have seen every Tarintino movie to pull it off . You would also need to be two crazy extroverts who might hire Brazilian dancers to start the party after the cake.
“Bikini enjoys an extraordinary view of the Naples Gulf and accommodates up to 160 people in a divine outdoor setting. Guests enjoy a genuine kitchen from the sea, completed with typical Italian dairy products and fine Italian wines. The restaurant brags with excellent service, hospitality and professionalism. With a background of a splendid nature and a wonderful seascape, lovingly protected and put in light, it is depicted as an island of comfort and serenity.” Direct text from Castellamare Bikini website
My favourite locations 14: Massa Lubrense: La Conca del Sogno
This is probably the most original of all the suggestions i have for you. You load all your guests into bots from a small port just after Massa Lubresnse. The boats can meet in the middle of the sea for a quick toast and off to the restaurant Lido) on the rocks. With many terraces which go out into the sea. Where you can spend the night dancing and feasting on Oysters. The restaurant is not the prettiest but the location is so great nothing else matters. The price is also probably the best you will find and the quality is fantastic. Though not trendy and chic it does give you the possibility to party till sunrise.
“La Conca del Sogno stands alone upon land which after the war was used exclusively for rock excavation. The private and hidden cove is in a splendid position within Marina del Cantone, shortly after the Sorrento Coastline. With some slightly modern touches, this secret location remembers its small beginnings and reflects some of the old traditions that started this adventure.” Direct text from La Conca del Sogno website
My favourite locations 13 Milan: Villa Perego a Cremago (Erba)
You know those places you go to in your dreams, where your love chases you in misty hedged labyrinths? Well that is the atmosphere at this villa. Classic and refined, yet a little bit of eccentricity floats on the air. The food was good though I think it was catering. There is a gorgeous space for cocktails and a dream like hall with huge French windows for the after party.
“Villa Perego di Cremnago is a prestigious monumental complex open for weddings. This magnificent complex consists of a palace by the Architect Piermarini, stables by Simon Cantoni, a private chapel painted with XVI century frescoes, an XVIII century lemonhouse house and three big charming gardens. The whole complex has been declared an Italian National Monument since 1906 and it is known as one of the most precious houses in Italy.”Direct text from Villa Perego e Cremnago website
My favourite locations 09 – Santa Caterina- Amalfi – Italy
Food is good. The garden is sweet, though small. The deck on the rocks has potential especially during full moon. The staff are friendly though very traditional and a little rigid. But I have only done one wedding there and it rained and the bride was not very easy. Therefore my first impression may not have been sparkling but I think it has potential.
“Santa Caterina enjoys a panoramic coastal setting of incomparable beauty at the summit of an extensive property. It begins at the Amalfi drive, whose curve hugs the hillside, and tumbles down to the water’s edge in a series of landscaped natural terraces.” Direct text from Santa Caterina website
My favourite locations 07 – Palazzo Murat – Positano – Italy
The gate, doorways, windows, and furniture have such gorgeous shapes and styles. I love the size of the rooms, windows and beds. The garden is a frame for a truly unique skyline. The organic frame is trimmed with mountains, trees and the dome of the Cathedral. The food is also seriously good and I have found the staff to be friendly and considerate.
“Housed in an old seventeenth century palace, Hotel Murat has been refurbished in the style of the Neapolitan baroque school of Vanvitelli, carefully conserving its architectural flourish and period objects.” Direct text from Palazzo Murat website
My favourite locations 06 – Mamma Agata – Ravello – Italy
I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT MAMMA AGATA. It’s voted the number one thing to do on the Amalfi Coast by trip advisor. And for good reason, it’s an authentic and fun experience for the whole family. Finally something all your guest will enjoy doing together. Mind you it will need to be a smaller group for a cooking lesson. I am doing my first wedding at Mamma Agata so I will keep you up to date on my opinions. So stayed tuned girls for all the gossip. ;0)
“For an exciting and different epicurean experience, Mamma Agata is the perfect spot. Situated high above the Amalfi Coast, it boasts terraces with views of the cliffs of Ravello cascading down to the sea. This famous and favourite location makes for a personal and intimate wedding.” Direct text from Mamma Agata website
My favourite locations 05 – Hotel Palumbo- Ravello – Italy
I simply adore the dinning room of Villa Palumbo. The fresco’s on the ceilings and the pains, the pavement and the windows all create a truly authentic Amalfi Coast atmosphere. The rooms are a delight since the building was once a home and so are varied in styles and shapes.
“From the enchanting gardens of this lovingly restored medieval palazzo, your gaze can wander out to the furthest point of the Gulf of Salerno, the Cilent Coast and the archaeological inland area of Paestum. The astounding blues of sky and sea are enhanced by the intense green of the hotel’s Mediterranean gardens.” Direct text from Hotel Palumbo website
My favourite locations 04 – Villa Eva – Ravello – Italy
One of the number one reasons to have your wedding at Villa Eva would because the fun does not have to finish at midnight. The staff are very professional but also pleasant and accommodating. Which can be helpful at sunset when you want to take some pickies and dinner is due to start. Other hotels are very strict about timetables. Villa Eva is very accommodating. There is loads of space for babies to play in a gorgeous big flower garden. Their views are also lovely. And I think the relationship between quality and price is very good. Much of the food eaten at Villa Evan and Villa Maria comes out of their Gardens.
“A romantic villa surrounded by a park of over 3000 square metres and beautiful gardens. It offers a view of the incomparable scenery of the Amalfi Coast and is a wonderfully tranquil spot.” Direct text from Villa Eva’s website
My favourite locations 02 – Palazzo Sasso – Ravello – Italy
Sasso makes the best Bellini’s in the whole world. Seriously ridiculously delicious. Then if you love food the restaurant will make you fall in love. Gorgeous architecture but one of my favourite features is a gorgeous sculpture woman frolicking in the fountain. So many gorgeous places to take pictures but they can only cater to smaller weddings.
“This is a stunning five-star deluxe hotel that overlooks some of the Amalfi Coast’s most picturesque fishing villages. The hotel is a 12th century Italian villa whose beauty and tranquillity have inspired many famous personalities. General Eisenhower was a resident when he was planning the attack on Monte Cassino, and former guests remember Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini giggling over dinner in the restaurant.” Direct text from Pallazzo Sasso website
My favourite locations 01 – Villa Cimbrone – Ravello- Italy (part B)
Villa Cimbrone is the crème de la crème of what the Amalfi Coast has to offer. Views, sea, sun and sky all mix to create that magical ambiance for your day. The exquisite palace mixes the understated luxury of an elite venue with the intimate and romantic ambiance of a family-run hotel. Marry in open air splendid gardens with breathtaking views, or in elegant historical rooms that date back almost a thousand years. A sparkling jewel in a class of its own, Villa Cimbrone provides a unique setting for your wedding day.
The Couple with a baby
I have already mentioned how important it is to keep baby well fed and rested on the big day. Mostly importantly taking their pictures as soon as possible before we have the usual baby wedding day stress melt down. But I have one other silly but effective trick to share. Make sure you wear an interesting strong bracelet. Particularly effective is a chunky charm bracelet. The younger the baby and the twinkilier the bracelet, the more effective it will be.
Confetti Suggestions
My favourite confetti is biodegradable and light. For example petals, feathers, rice paper shapes, bougainvillea flowers dried and bubbles. I do not like rice because it can kill the birds and looks boring in pictures. I find candy coated almonds hard since I often get hit too. Coins are just well … violent. I also love those over the top suggestion for the exit like the releasing of doves, balloons (though not that eco friendly) and butterflies. Not sure if there is anyone in Italy who releases butterflies for weddings. But they look amazing.
Veil or hat
There have been very few veils which have made me clap with joy. I am a little partial for 1920 style short veils bordered with decadent big lace trim. Especially if it frames the face.
However having said that I want to say I love hats. Hats can turn an ordinary girl into a lady. Too big a hat will make couple shots a bit difficult, but have a look at some of Philip Tracey’s more sculptural designs. Most of all I love sculpt caps, box hats and hair pieces with mini veils. They are sexy and elegant and a breathe of fresh time while giving a little wave at retro.
Sample of a good schedule: Part two
This is for a wedding in June or July in Ravello. Held in the Cathedral.
7:30 Get out of church – a lot of kissing and a big group photo takes you at least half an hour often more
8:00 photographs of the two of you (we run ahead to Cimbrone -15 minutes to get to Cimbrone if you weren’t sensible with your dress and shoe choice or it could take an hour)
8:15 Guests make their way up to the Villa
8:30 Guest arrive
8:45 Final guest arrive and you join them and finally have a drink and snack
9:15 unfortunately now we need to do groups before it’s too dark and already boring pictures will be even worse. The bigger your list the longer it will take. So think- Do you really want to be doing loads of boring group shots when it’s cocktail hour and one of the best moments for reportage?
10:00 Dinner and speeches
11:00 Dancing and cake
12:00 Start of after party
Italian folk music for your wedding
Looking for entertainment which will please both young and old can be difficult. But choosing music which appeals to both because it maybe new or because it’s fun, will make the wedding enjoyable for all. The only music I have found which involves young and old would be Italian folk music and dancing. Everybody loves it and though it’s sometimes new for destination couples it’s antique roots some how make it familiar. Contact Marco at Wedding Music in Ravello.
10 Top Tricks to help you look your absolute best on your wedding day! #10
10. Good attitude
There is nothing uglier than a controlling, grumpy, sulky, spoilt brat of a bride who has forgotten the reason she is there in the first place. If you are relaxed and having a ball, you will see it in the pictures. You will radiate love if you concentrate on those feelings. Tension, stress and irritation all show up in photography. No one is gorgeous in these states of mind. Having a little trust in the people you have chosen to create you dream, will go a long way to improving your enjoyment on the day. And if you have fun, so will everybody else, and of course my job will be easy. Does it really matter that the ponies are a different pink? So many brides tell me, “it all has to be just perfect, I am a detail person.”
Well while those brides are checking up on the wedding planner (who is doing the 100th wedding) she is missing the best light and the party. You’ve got to let go! This is such a common syndrome among brides and I often work hard in the preparation to loosen them up. For their sakes and of course my own, I want the best pictures possible. So if you are a control freak, promise yourself (and me) that for just one day you are going to let go and enjoy. Or else what is the point of the party.

7. The security of Touching up
Now I don’t recommend completely changing the way you look. But I see no reason why brides should not enjoy the advantages supermodels have enjoyed for years. Just take a look at some of these before and after images to get an idea of what I mean.
So if you choose me to be your photographer, I recommend that you discuss with me any complexes or insecurities you have. The touching-up I do to your wedding photos is subtle, so you can’t recognise the changes unless you compare them to the original image. If you want me to do anything above or beyond this, e.g. removing the bump on the bridge of your nose, you need to let me know!

3. Posing
Now I know this is a swear word in the wedding world, but if you want to look nearly as good as the girls in magazines, you’ve got to do a little posing. This is usually a very embarrassing concept for most brides, who have often never even had their picture taken professionally. While one is finding the perfect pose, one wastes a little time and often we have to go through one or two that don’t work and make you feel silly.
But, I find plain, classic wedding photographs dull. So whilst I love reportage, I also like making you look gorgeous, so think that something must be said for half an hours worth of funky flattering posing.
So we want posed pictures but we find posing embarrassing. Why? Probably because the first time we ever try it is in front of a complete stranger on our wedding day. So here’s a little tip. I often ask brides who are very good in front of the camera “where did you learn to do that?” they nearly always reply. “I have been practising for years in front of the mirror”
Still not convinced. Let me help you out here. I have big ears and I hate them. But I know when I am having my picture taken, to turn my head a little to the side, so you only see one ear. This way you can hardly see how my ears stick out. If you shoot me head on… well that is a whole other story….
Right I feel you are with me now. The thing to do is to go through some mags and collect a whole bunch of poses you adore. Practise, practise, practise… even as a couple. You will save a whole lot of time on the day and you will naturally look amazing.
What is out? – part two
Long transparent gloves are ugly girls. So are big puffy skirts and bustiers don’t do anything for making us look skinny. Arms look bigger and even unfortunately even the skinniest of us all are prone to back fat.
A very long veil, I promise you, will only torment and torture you on the day. It will dust the town. Get hooked on the carpet as you walk down the aisle. People will stand on it and it will make you hot. Most brides spend hundreds on their veils, walk out the church and desperately ask me, “can I take this thing off now?”
What is out? – part one
Pointy shoes are out and thank goodness for it. Round toes and peep toe shoes are in. Heels are in but if you can’t cope then keep some pretty sequence slippers handy. Darlings that’s what bridesmaids are for.
Shiny eye make up also simply won’t do. Unless you are a child bride and you are marrying at 17 don’t wear shiny shadows. Again there are exceptions but nearly everybody looks older and sillier and the camera doesn’t like it much either.
What is hot? – part two
Much to my delight the 1920’s have made a come back. This look is delightful and fun. And naturally very sexy. The part I like the best would have to be the hairstyles. I love 1920’s waves and hair up in delicious organic shapes. Round toed shoes and long strings of pearls. Cleavage and sequence with dropped waste lines. And it’s almost always a good idea to make the men wear complimentary outfits, like tuxedoes. Deco jewellery is also exquisite.
Why are eloper’s photographs always better?
When you Elope you gain the most precious element of a wedding day; Time. Time to take gorgeous pictures. AT a relaxed and fun pace. Planning shooting around the best natural light time. Other things however become more difficult to do in two. Like dancing, it can feel silly and forced especially disco dancing. But slow dancing works. During dinner you won’t want a photographer to keep on shooting. SO the pictures are considerably less reportage. But can still be kept natural and fun. Avoiding ridiculously posed images. One way to keep the party going. Is to arrange a boat ride or a fun trash the dress shoot for a grand finale. Never is the photography more important than when you elope.
How are Italian weddings different?
Italian weddings are serious affairs and many people wear black. They do not have speeches and there is not always dancing. They give small gifts to their guest to say thank you. The main activity during Italian weddings is eating. There can be up to ten courses with lemon sorbet between the fish and meat. Need I say more? There are exceptions to this rule. And this summer I finally went to a few Italian weddings which were a huge amount of fun.
It’s rude for any one other than the bride to wear white.
I really thought this one was common knowledge but I keep going to weddings where the sister of the bride is wearing a short mini dress. No one notices the bride. And when you are wearing a meringue and someone wears a sexy dress and stands next to you will look silly. Very silly. So be slightly conservative when you chose bridesmaids dresses. You must not make them ugly but they should not be super sexy. Unless you are not marrying in a church and you wear a super sexy bridal dress.
Don’t travel on your wedding day
So I know I have harped on about this before but I just cannot emphasis it enough. Try not to spend a lot of time travelling on your wedding day. Now this might sound obvious but some brides want it all. SO they get dressed in Positano… then they take an hour and a half windy road drive in the summer heat and chaos. They get married in the Duomo in Amalfi and then they have their reception in Ravello. Which between traffic, robots and the walking will cost at least 40 minutes of time. And I mean at least. So you if you are lucky you will loose 2 hours and 10 minutes of party and shootings and daylight. A WASTE GIRLS!!!!!!!! It’s the one thing you can’t order extra of – TIME.
Who can get away with tanning.
- very dark skinned people
- people with unusually even skin tone
- people who are used to seeing themselves tanned
- when both partners are fairly similar in skin tone
I say this cautiously because when you make yourself a dark red colour and your skin is tired and wrinkled, it becomes difficult to do a pretty picture. Especially when you are wearing white and if your partner is the colour of snow. Further, if you are trying desperately to look slimmer and try a tan for the first time you might never look at the pictures and feel like you are looking at yourself.
Good lighting at your venue – Part 02
We adore first dance and speeches against windows or doorways with the sunset. This is not always possible but by doing both before the dinner begins, means you can almost certainly get some great skies through glass windows and doors. If you are going to use candles as a major part of your lighting, at least double what you think you need. When it comes to candles and photography, you can never have enough candles. And there can be nothing more mystic and romantic than hundreds of candles.
Complex control – a big ears
Big ears – another common complex for brides and grooms having their photo taken. There are several things that we can do to avoid those big sticky our ears, we all fear.
- The first is your hairstyle. Avoid all ‘up’ do’s and instead go with a nice, tidy hair down.
- Think about adding a hat (yes you grooms too!), or a big side flower in your hair, as a feature. A great cover and eye distracter.
- The best one for the boys – There are some great tricks your photographer can also use to help you. Go for side on profile pictures or 3/4 face on. By avoiding 100% face on, it will cut down the angles.
- Don’t wear stud earrings that stick to your ears. Instead consider long dangly earrings which will draw the attention away from your ears.
Complex control – a big nose
This must be the biggest request I ever get, “I am begging you, no profile pictures”. How sad that our society has so limited our concept of beauty. My husband Gianni loves people with less than perfect features. But be that as it may it won’t change the fact you hate your nose.
Have some portraits done where a perfect pose can be found to minimize the size of your nose. If you just have only reportage images there will loads of profile images.
Quick Ceremony tips – part 2
When you are putting on the ring – take a deep breath first to calm nerves. It will go on – so don’t worry about fumbling and making a muck of it. Also try not to cover the ring with your hand – you will want a close up of this photo, but it will be impossible for your photographer if hands are over the top.
Ensure that your priest or celebrist knows your full names and pronouncation like the back of his/her hand. This can save embarrassing muddle ups.
Reserve seats for family members in the first two seating rows. This can be done cutely with nice name cards (e.g Father of Bride, Mother of Bride…etc etc)
Quick Ceremony tips – part 1
- Remember to kiss your Dad goodbye at the alter
- Try and memorise your vowels if possible
- Organise a microphone if your venue is in a wide open space, or a big church. Also if you know that you speak particularly quietly. Whilst it is more important that you can hear eachother, your family and friends also want to hear you.
- Face eachother – it is easy to face the priest or celebrist
Organising your wedding abroad 5 quick tips – part 1
- Consider guest accommodation. The best option is to organise this through your wedding planner, and take advantage of group discounts. If you don’t have a wedding planner give a list of recommendations close to your venue with your invite, so guests know where to start looking.
- If you have free days – try and organise or suggest local group activities for your guests. (Boat trips, excursions and general sightseeing). This will help let all your guests get to know eachother, and create a great ‘on holiday’ group atmosphere.
To party or not to party after the reception
- A big decision for some, is whether they consider an after party, when the formal wedding reception is finished, or to make the formal reception a party as soon as dinner is finished. If you want to organise an after party…
- You have to look after yourself during the day if you want to be still standing for the party.
- Check venue after hours licenses for music and alcohol.
- Consider your plans for the next day. Are you having a breakfast or brunch?
Why not to let the rain spoil your day
- If you change your mindset, the rain can be a great excuse to get outside and be cheekily playful
- Pretty white umbrellas are a great accessory and prop. Make sure you buy one – just in case!
- You avoid all bright harsh sunlight and instead get perhaps a dramatic dark skyline, which looks fantastic in photos
- Let’s face it. Dolly Parton was right ‘if you wanna see the Rainbow – you gotta put up with the rain’
- Italians the culture of love – will always tell you, if you believe it ‘ Sposa bagnata, sposa fortunata’. Traditions have it, that a wet bride is a lucky bride!
Considering Morning vs Afternoon….why afternoons can be better (Part 2)
- With an afternoon ceremony, you give your guests more freedom and time to get themselves to your venue and organise parking. Allowing them to travel calmly will mean that everyone will already be on time and waiting for you at the ceremony venue!
- Afternoon sunlight is a lot more forgiving and gentle that harsh midmorning light. Your photographer will thank you for it, and your photographs will show the difference.
- Late afternoon is a also a lot cooler for you all, and there is more likelihood of a nice fresh breeze. No one wants to be a sweaty bride or groom
- One word….SUNSET!!
Considering Morning vs Afternoon….why afternoons can be better (part 1)
- A relaxed bride and groom always makes for a better day for all. With an afternoon ceremony, you can take the morning to have a sleep in, a big walk and fresh air, and a decent breakfast.
- You can take your time getting ready, and will have no horrible early morning starts (which no-one really likes anyway!)
- You will enjoy the build up more during the morning (rather than being in a rush from 6am)..treasure you last few hours.
Things to watch out for when shopping on line
- Make sure they ship where you are before you even start shopping. It’s terribly sad to find a dress you can’t live without , only to discover that they will not sell it to you.
- Good on line shops show materials, measurements, different views ect.
- By searching on shopping blogs you will get great hints from other addicts
- Make sure what the rules are about returning items, some shops implement dead lines
- Remember if you are in Europe and you buy from Victoria Secret (USA) you are going to get a tax to pay for importing when the goods arrive. So although the price might seem cheap remember this tax and shipping. All Saints (my all time favorite) offers free shipping.
Crazy wedding dress ideas for the eccentric bride – part 01
So you have a limited budget and you are a nutty kind of girl who would rather have root canal work than wear a poofy meringue wedding dress. I have some crazy ideas – have a look at what some of the designers have to offer in white. Keep an open mind and fly. I say bring back the mini wedding dress, that is if you have the legs for it.
The list of my favourite fashion haunts tomorrow … tune in again.
When is a make up artist a good idea?
If you have bad skin. Very big nose or awkward features you may want to invest in a make up artist. Make up can go a long way when trying to hard dark marks, uneven skin tone and big noses. I would highly recommend a trial and that you see the make up in day light. Make up used to disguise imperfections will always seem a little heavy especially to someone not used to wearing make up, but you would be amazed to see the difference. For fun get a friend to come along and take a before and after picture to compare.
If I did my own makeup would that sound crazy? – part two
My recommendation would be to keep it light. I can fix anything picture wise with photoshop. I think lessons are a great idea. I would go to Mac or Bobby Brown and don’t over do the tan (which is worse for pictures than shine). Both Mac and Bobby Brown will have anti-shine powders, you can keep handy on the day. I like a bride who looks like she is wearing no make up but has accentuated her best features. Darling you are gorgeous, no dominant features to hide or bad skin. Lots of mascara and a little lip gloss would be fine for the pictures. And you can feel secure in knowing that anything not perfect I can fix afterwards…
If you do find one and decide to hire a make up artist make sure you insist on a trial first.
Selecting the images
Now if I do a good job this will be the worst job of your life. So where to start. Download the preview/ web folder onto your computer. Throw away those you hate. Start three folders, Love, like, unsure. Start to make a time line putting the most important and liked images in first. Many have to stop right there but if you don’t have enough in the love folder you can dip into the other two. Put them in order. Show them to close family and friends for opinions. Then do what your heart tells you.
Creating your wedding album
I think it’s important o have an idea or a theme. Somewhere to start from. Lets say you love 1950 vintage. We go in with black and white in mind but we have an open mind. Because if there is a gorgeous colour image it’s a pity to turn it into a black and white images because it does not fit into how you think the structure will be. Often we start with one idea and find the images tell us how they would like to be put together. And the album turns out much better than if you try to control the whole process. Creativity is a process and has a life of it’s own. If you are an artist you will know what I mean. Personally I believe all humans are artists.
Couples with small children – an intro
Children and babies often get stressed on a wedding. Especial children who belong to the couple. They will be greeted and squeezed by a bunch of strangers. The whole routine will change and Mum and Dad will be very distracted. Then they dress the poor dumplings in something by DG and poor baby feels strangled. Baby misses her nap. Then usually dinner starts just when we are supposed to take her picture. She turns in psycho baby, Mum starts to not feel happy and then of course when the bride is unhappy… it’s only fair she makes the groom miserable too. How to avoid this nightmare?
Can I choose the photos for the album myself?
Usually my clients ask me to choose the images for their albums. This is because I have an artist’s eye and I am able to carefully construct the storyline and make the most of the themes and colours – not to mention that this is a painstaking and time-consuming process! Having said that, a wedding album is a very personal thing, and some clients like to choose their own photos. I am able to offer my clients the added option of digital proofing. This means I send you 350 images on CD (in small format, 300px by 300px, the same size my large images appear on my website). You can select from here the images you would like in your album. The 350 images will not have been touched up yet and so will look quite different from the finished product.
How do I decide which package is right for me?
You need to ask yourselves:
Do you want a professionally presented album, with touched up photos, or do you just want all of your photos from the day given to you on a DVD so that you can make your own album?
Do you want a video made?
Do have a cake cutting ceremony at a set time that you want to be included?
Are you and your groom both getting ready at the same hotel?
Are your ceremony and reception located close together?
How many guests will you have?
What is your budget?
Images to capture after sunset – part 02
Then there are the speeches and first dance, which we recommend you do before the meal or after the starter. It will be so much prettier with the sunset in the windows or a dark blue sky instead of a black one. Recently a gorgeous couple I shot especially learnt to tango for their first dance and adored sparkling outfits. It was a great start to the reception and naturally made for great images.
A rigid schedule – part 01
One of the things I love about working at “Villa Eva” (Ravello) is that the staff and chef are very flexible. They honour the importance of the photographs by being super flexible. They ask me to be part of deciding the perfect time on the day, just so that I can catch that gorgeous dusk light. And the group photographs shot there are always lovely, all thanks to the staff of Villa Eva.
Time to work – part 01
The best images on my website are the best because I was given time to work. The more time I am given, the better the pictures will be. It’s simple, the more one shoots the better the odds of great images. This does not mean that you have to take the biggest package but rather that you give your photographer at least 30 to 40 minutes to do portraits and half an hour to do groups. It’s just not possible in any less.
Making cake cutting images less boring
If you are cutting your wedding cake outside you might like to consider a small canopy over you and your cake. This will give the photographer something to bounce the cake off (well bounce the light off anyway). Another great idea is a net or tent hanging around the cake. I have also seen gorgeous smoky images from smoke machines or dry ice. A sea of candles can completely eliminate the use of the nasty flash. What about clouds of fairy lights? Especially if you are outside they can be hang on the shrubs behind you. A bright light place behind you on ground level will also give a fabulous effect especially when used with flash.
Good lighting at your venue – Part 02
We adore first dance and speeches against windows or doorways with the sunset. Images to capture after sunset –part 01
First the entrance into the dinning room is great and it makes it all the more fun if you are announced. Then we usually shoot a few ambient shots, the first course and you two at your table. We then back off, nobody looks sexy eating… unless you are Kim Basinger. But the rest of us mortal are not sexy and this gives us a chance to down load and check if “tutto aposto” (if everything is in position.)
A rigid schedule – part 02
Most hotels insist on a very strict schedule and this is often detrimental to the photographs. The best pictures are often taken before sunset and so a wise photographer really wants to use all those last few seconds of day light. That doesn’t mean we can’t get great pictures when the sun goes down, it just means that groups are much prettier in natural light and so are most portraits. There are of course always exceptions.

A show of lights
We adore light shows and design, especially in a beautiful garden. When one has the aperitivo (don’t you love that word) on the terrace and you walk to the crypt afterwards they often give divine lighting shows to the dizzy wandering guest. And if there is time to take a few quick photographs, you will get images that few others have. Below I have included a few images of the use of truly breathtaking lighting.
When will we bring in a little extra lighting?
If you know you are going to have quite a few very long speeches you need to let us know. Or if the speeches will be in a very dark place. In both these situations we would bring along a small video light to help guarantee the quality of the video images. Low light can create a lot of grain. If it rains we might also bring in a little video light for the photography during portraits and groups. A cake cutting outside maybe beautiful for the human eye but the cameras often need a little help.
Great photographers book fast
Good photographers limit the number of weddings they do each year and so book up quickly. Make sure you do your research fast and don’t leave it till the last minute. I often get calls from desperate brides who have left things for the last minute and can’t find ANY photographer at all. If you book a year in advance you will find that may get better prices since the prices often increase the next year. Make sure you choose well and you are sure. Once you are sure about your choice make sure you get a deposit paid and a contract signed. Then you can be relaxed about the most important investment of the day. Because it’s the most important investment of the day it should be the first one you take care of.
Charming your service providers.
We all do it, try much hard for those people we like. Now I know your florist, wedding planner and photographer are at your service but I can tell you, charming your service provides will give you the deluxe service. They will do back flips for you and you will all enjoy your wedding more. This in turn will make for good moods all round. Nothing worse than a spoilt brat bride, who believe me, all the service provides will give average service to and avoid the rest of the time. But a lady will be treated as such and we all try a little hard for those we like.
Why is wedding photography so expensive? Part 03
Popular wedding photographers are always expensive, the more popular they are the more expensive they will be. Becoming a popular photographer means they have worked on their skills for years and deliver their best year after year. This is easily checked with references. Unfortunately the old proverb stands true, “you get what you pay for”.
There is a huge responsibility placed on the shoulders of a wedding photographer. Added to this pressure is the limited time, the groom who does not want to be shot, the mother in law who wants five hundred groups, the priest who want her to stand at the back of the church and all your guests with their digital camera who keeps standing in front of her at all the important moments. It takes a special skilled person to deliver breath taking results every time, no matter what the conditions or pressure levels. And if they are this good every time, it means they work so hard at it that they have no life.
The worst mistakes you can make as a bride. – part 03
11. Not buying a white umbrella…it means it will rain
12. Being late – instead of being relaxed and enjoying your day, you will spend your day trying to catch up.
13.Organising your ceremony and reception venues in different locations. Try not to take a car on your wedding day, as soon as you and your guests have to travel time is wasted and people get tired, hot and stressed. (And car sick if you are marrying on the Amalfi coast)
14.Have a list of groups which exceeds seven or so groups. Your guests will hate you for it and your album will be full of dull pictures because you photographer was shooting boring groups while all the juicy stuff was going on in the good light.
15.Let your happiness depend on the perfection of the day. Nothing is ever perfect and you will only set yourself up for disaster if your mood depends on the sunshine.
The worst mistakes you can make as a bride. – part 01
1. Not having something warm to put on on your day (for just incase)
2. Not having a pair of chic slip ons for when your feet hurt
3. Getting drunk (I have seen some scary things – once a bride tried to get it on with my hubby because she was drunk, yes on her wedding day)
4. Taking tranquilizers and then thinking you can drink (you won’t remember a thing)
5. Asking a friend who drinks too much to be your maid of honour or best man (you have seen the movie – I have seen it in real life and it’s very embarrassing).
What to do when it’s impossible to meet?
Sometimes during the summer season it’s absolutely impossible to meet. In June I shoot nearly everyday and so it can sometimes be impossible to meet. Also for international weddings outside of Italy it really becomes difficult to meet. So what can you do to help me to get to know you?
1. skype me… just as good as meeting in person really
2. write me long letters all about you
3. send me pictures of you
4. add me to facebook
5. send me pictures you love
Of course you can do all of the above even if you do get a chance to meet me.
The second meeting
A second meeting can be good just before the wedding to go over details and reassure clients. I like to send off a wedding form to each couple a few weeks before their wedding. I ask them to list the most important details like venues address, group photographs required, styles they enjoy etc. This form is very important because I could never remember all the details mentioned at a meeting. I do over 60 meetings a year and it’s impossible to remember everybody’s details. This way I have everything on the form and I am able to discuss finer details like timing at this second meeting.
The next stage – the meeting
Then once this chemistry has been certified and you have seen our pricelist, and you are still interested in me I am more than happy to meet. I bring along album examples and we discuss details, photography, venues, tastes, styles… and sometimes life in general. We will laugh, plan, whisper and giggle some more. But it will be a comfortable meeting with my clients prepared. Knowing which questions they want to ask. I don’t want to convince anyone to take me. If clients aren’t sure about my work then I am not the photographer for them. Most clients come to the meetings pretty sure they love the work but not sure about the nutter behind the camera. So I prefer this meeting to be about my new relationship with my client.
The chemistry phone call #1
The best solution is a nice long chin wag on the phone before actually booking me. I am not everybody’s cup of tea. A quick phone call can establish if there can be magic between us. Clients don’t realise that often it is me who is interviewing them and trying to decide if things will work between us. If there will be any magic.
Am I your cup of tea?
First read what you can on my website and on my blog. See a whole bunch of pictures till you can’t look anymore. Check out the prices and your budget. Ask my booking manager for some references to contact. By now you will have a good idea of my achievements, styles and personality. If you still fancy me chasing you around on your wedding day… it’s time to make that call.
The runaway bride and groom …5 things to remember, so you can make the most it. #5
5) If you are brave, consider a “trash your dress” shoot together – in the pool, on the beach, by the flowerbeds or in rustic surroundings. Breaking all the rules in your wedding photos, will go hand in hand with your breaking all the rules Elopement!
The runaway bride and groom …5 things to remember, so you can make the most it. #4
4) Pay close attention to your appearance. The details will become an important feature in your photos, and will be the things you want to look back on – shoes, flowers, cufflinks, hair, makeup, the vows. Remember …It’s the little things.

2) Although you won’t have formal speeches to prepare, think in advance of your vows and include the special words, thoughts, poems, or even music which are personal to you both. So you don’t have the big wedding party or guest list, but emotion will still catch up with you on the day, so it pays to be a little prepared with words.
The runaway bride and groom …5 things to remember, so you can make the most it. #1
1) Treasure the private moments – this is what you are here for! If it means slowing down and stopping to take it all in for 10 minutes, then do it. It’s not like you have a dinner room full of guests waiting for you!
The smoking bride and groom
I smoke but I personally try not to have photographs taken of me with a cigarette. It’s quite ugly a bride and groom walking in the street with cigarettes in their hands. While one or two fun 1950′s style smoking portraits can be done, I don’t recommend smoking while you are having your picture taken. We can have ‘no shooting smoking breaks’ if you are a chain smoker. It’s not too difficult to go a few hours at a time without smoking.
I also recommend mini mints like tic tacs. Beware of gum especially if you are having video or mostly reportage photography. You will be horrified to know what we look like when we chew… And again smokers get red eyes, so have those drops ready.
It’s also important to go for a teeth spring clean before your big day. You will take years off your appearance instantly. Be careful not to over bleach teeth since you will look like I have been over zealous with the touching up.
Why are good wedding photographers so expensive?
Firstly wedding photography is very difficult. Often the subjects are not models, there is loads of stress, very limited time, dynamic lighting conditions, relationships, grumpy priests, and Aunty Lucy who keeps jumping in front of us during the rings… the list is endless.
You have to be really good at a number of kinds of photography e.g. landscape, portraits, interiors, groups… you name it..
Photographers in general have quite a snobby attitude towards wedding photography. No one studying photography will admit to wanting to be a wedding photographer. Fashion, advertising etc. The best students go there and apparently the rest of us become wedding photographers. Well it turns out there are only a few really good wedding photographers out there. Serious photography lovers know that it’s worth paying for and ruin it for everybody else.
Basically a photographer can only do a few weddings every year before they start to loose chunks of hair. The limit at a max is around fifty, as nearly all weddings fall in summer. So because they get more requests than they can do they need to make themselves more expensive. It’s the old and simple supply and demand law. It’s a sad truth that the photographer who won’t give you a discount has loads of work and will fill your date anyway. This is often because they are good.
Ever been to Venice and fallen for the “tourist menu” and felt robbed. Paying a little for rubbish is expensive. Paying a lot for something which requires study and work, and which is of a supreme quality is value for money.

The Bomboniere Perspective
So in Italy there is the tradition of giving a small favour to your guests on their departure. These are often expensive, useless and seldom match the taste of all the guests. I think generosity brings happy fortune and I recommend a small donation to a worth while charity instead. The guest can be informed of your gift on their behalf with a small card accompanied by delicious Italian confetti. At the moment there are the most incredible flavours available like pear and cheese cake. Instead of adding to the world pollution problem you can spread a little love and gererosity.
Getting perspective on the whole subject of your wedding can only be good. Sometime we forget just how lucky and spoilt we are. We get upset about nonsense while life passes us by. Getting perspective and getting grateful will help you appreciate everything. Feel lucky, you are. So many people never find love, let alone someone who is prepared to promise forever. Get real and get happy.
The Buddhists believe desire is suffering. Remember you already have more than most.
Your bridezilla exorcism – part 03
Exercise five
Still can’t let go or tame the wild horses that run wild in your head? Make a worry jar, write your worries on pieces of paper and pop them in the jar. The jar is your average mailing service to the universe, things you don’t know what to do about put them in your jar. Hand it over and forget it. It’s in the jar.
Exercise six
Repeat this mantra 100 times each time you brush your teeth, yes 100 times… everyday:
Things which are not perfect can be beautiful. The unexpected can be a blessing in disguise
For more helpful advice on how to tame the bridezilla in you.
Why not be a Bridezilla?
I know you are saying, “So what, I find you get what you ask for and there is nothing wrong with wanting the best.” But the truth is… behave like this and you will get mediocre service, be stressed and exhausted and you will ruin your day. You won’t sleep the night before. You will have dark rings under your eyes. You will have a terrible time and your guests will notice. Everything will seem wrong and you will forget why you are there in the first place.
Turn in tomorrow for how to conduct your Bridezilla exorcism and rid yourself of the only person who can ruin your day.
“Are you a Bridezilla?” score results and what exactly is a Bridezilla
If you answered yes to any one of yesterday’s questions, there is a possibility that you might be a Bridezilla.
What is a Bridezilla?
• A Bridezilla is a person who is almost impossible to keep happy on the day.
• She is irritable and neurotic and often childish.
• Sometimes her wedding day is just a challenge to show off to her friends.
• Sometimes a perfectly lovely girl will turn into a witch just because of the extreme stress.
• Most Bridezillas fantasise about their day for years and want the reality to match their dreams.
• Bridezillas don’t believe that people respond well to praise but rather respond well to criticism.
• She looks for faults and does not notice the hard work the professionals around her put in.
• She wants to fit a weeks worth of partying in 6 hours… she wants the impossible and she wants it fast.
• She is not interested in the difficulties or feelings of others.
• Above all a Bridzezilla is a control freak and a perfectionist.

Eloping to the Amalfi Coast
It is the romantic dream wedding – eloping to a small pocket of paradise, just you and your partner. You can enjoy a relaxed wedding day, soak up the local culture and also cleverly combine your wedding and honeymoon into one blissful and glorious stretch.
But although your elopement will let you forget about common wedding headaches like mile-long guest lists, complicated seating plans and embarrassing speeches, there is one tradition you would not want to forgo: amazing wedding photos to show your family and friends. Our photographers specialise in this type of photography, taking all the pressure off you while documenting your day without intruding on your privacy.
From our experience:
Remember that you chose to elope for a reason. Make the most of the private moments.
There will be endless photo opportunities. Our photographers are intimately familiar with the Amalfi Coast, and they will guide you to the best little spots and views that will make all the difference to your day.
Pay close attention to your appearance. The details will become an important feature in your photos – the shoes, cufflinks, your hair, makeup, the vows, etc.
If you are brave, consider a “trash your dress” shoot together – in the pool, on the beach, by the flowerbeds or in rustic surroundings.
Have fun with each other; it makes a difference to your photos. Allow yourselves the time to let the day take you where it wants to. A glass of champagne on the piazza, gelato on the beach, a quiet walk around old alleyways… These are the moments that will be etched into your memories forever.

Why do I have to pay the balance on the day?
I have couples who have still not chosen the final images five years after their wedding. Then got one got divorced and could not have cared less what I did with their wedding pictures. So once bitten twice shy and all of that. It’s also a day that couples have the money, a few months down the line couples often go through post wedding spending blues.
