Bridal Beauty Emergency Plan Strategy Four: The Beautician Part five

What to order?
A few days before:

2.Total wax

This form of torture needs little introduction. It’s a form of torture for women by woman and those glossy magazines. You know the kind, which tell us that being the way we were born is just not good enough. Anyway as you can tell I feel it’s us who should be paid for this pain. I will also admit to a sick pleasure, which descends right after having your body hair pulled out by the roots. Not indifferent to the euphoria one feels after a tattoo. And if you are brave enough for a Brazilian version be prepared for quite a surprise and a crazy itch afterwards but hey you only get married once.

Bridal Beauty Emergency Plan Strategy Three: Exercise – part three

Stretching

Stretching does wonderful things to one’s muscles. Other than making them supple, stretching also tones your muscles. The act of stretching is a quiet, slow action, which does wonders for the stress levels. Once you start stretching, notice that it soon becomes something you feel the need to do. Yoga is the ultimate form of stretching since it often incorporates meditation. Meditation and stretching are two excellent ways to fight the effects of stress. Stress makes you ugly and sick. Stretching is very important before and after exercise. Doing it before ensures you do not hurt yourself during your workout. If you stretch afterwards it can help avoid stiffness. Exercise and stretching should be started gradually or you will hurt yourself and have to stop. Which would put a dramatic stop on your beauty plan.

Bridal Beauty Emergency Plan Strategy Three: Exercise – part two

Feeling strong energised and happy is the best feeling in the world. The human body is a machine, which loves to be used. The more you use it the stronger it gets, the longer it lasts, the happier it is and the better it looks. Exercise is the ultimate drug, offers immediate gratification during exercise with delicious endorphins and then the bonus after effects on your body and mood. You can’t beat it. Exercise is the cheapest and most dramatic of all the strategies to reform your body. It’s just starting that is difficult.

Bridal Beauty Emergency Plan Strategy Two: Supplements

Vitamin & detoxifying supplements

Vitamin C allows toxins to be broken down and discarded by the body. So a good vitamin plan would be a good Multivitamin and maybe a little extra Vitamin C. Vitamin B is very good when combating the effects of stress. A natural immune booster will ensure your good health when you are travelling and experiencing stress. Stress places havoc on your skin and hair, a course of vitamins, which are geared towards nourishing hair, and skin can also be a good idea. I also like tonics, which are added to water and help clean out the system. I recommend using only natural supplements and make sure you are not over doing some vitamins like Vitamin D.

Bridal Beauty Emergency Plan – Strategy One : DIET– part six

Metabolism Stimulating Diet

It would shock you to know how much weight you would loose just by getting rid of the excess water you are retaining. The number one substance, which aggravates water retention, is sodium. The number one weapon against water retention is water. Flood your body and it lets go of its reserves. But this takes one to two days to kick in. Water retention is also effectively reduced with exercise, saunas, steam rooms and massages. And if you are prone to swelling in general avoid all alcohol for at least three days before your wedding.

Wedding Photography in Italy – part one

Firstly I want to make it quite clear that Italian wedding photographers are the best in the world. The below, in no way disputes this fact, I know what a touchy bunch artists are. All clear? Good. (Please don’t slash my car tyres.)

I hate to say it, but during the eighties and nineties wedding photography in Italy was really scary or at best, embarrassing. You can see the after effects of the torture inflicted in the eyes of young Italian couples. “PLEASE, no posing,” they beg. So naturally everybody flung themselves onto the other side of the scales. Reportage is the only style most Italian photographers and clients want to see. There are very few who are mixing reportage with fashion and portraiture photography.

What if I want my pictures to look like fashion photographs? Part three

Be prepared to pose and practise posing. Make a scrapbook of images you like and poses you like. Practise these and share them with me so that we are prepared and on the same page. As I have mentioned creativity is the art of play. If you don’t come ready to play the result will be a painful fruitless exercise and you would have wasted your money. Most people have little experience of posing and on a shoot is not a good time to try for the first time.

The pictures included in this blog are a mix between fashion and wedding portraits. Can you tell which are which?

Ideas on ways to save without anyone noticing – part 03

6. Don’t have sixteen bridesmaids

Traditionally it’s the bride who has to fit the bill for bridesmaids’ dresses. SO logically having four or five really makes things expensive. And if you shop for them at a nice shop like Monsoon you are likely to pay a lot less than you would at a Bridal boutique.

7. Don’t get married from end of May till mid September

Everything is more expensive during this time. Flights, hotels, and venues all increase price wise during peak season. You are far more likely to get discounts from service providers if you marry out of high season. Good photographers can sell Saturdays during those months four times over, it’s therefore unlikely they would offer you any kind of discount.

Good lighting at your venue – Part 01

May seem like a strange thing to consider when choosing a wedding venue. But one would be surprised to discover the difference a little ambient lighting can make. Photography is all about light and if you want great pictures you need to consider the lighting. So a venue which makes use of good natural light with huge windows or compensates for the lack of natural light with gorgeous artificial light, is an important consideration. Sometimes (and especially for video) we will be forced to add a little of our own lighting.

Why do I have to pay a deposit?

Two days ago a mother of a bride called me to cancel, two months before her daughters wedding. I had already turned down two large weddings because I was booked. When she called I went scampering off to see if the other couples had already booked other photographers which they had. Now although I have promised the cancelling bride that if I manage to sell the date she would not loose her deposit. But it’s unlikely that I sell the date at this late stage. So the thirty percent deposit helps cover the loss of earnings incurred. I am sorry for the bride who is cancelling because she had a change of heart, but I am running a business. I have a booking manager because I am a big softie when it comes to the hard stuff. A big softie who was making no money till I hired my precious booking manager.

Great photographers book fast

Good photographers limit the number of weddings they do each year and so book up quickly. Make sure you do your research fast and don’t leave it till the last minute. I often get calls from desperate brides who have left things for the last minute and can’t find ANY photographer at all. If you book a year in advance you will find that may get better prices since the prices often increase the next year. Make sure you choose well and you are sure. Once you are sure about your choice make sure you get a deposit paid and a contract signed. Then you can be relaxed about the most important investment of the day. Because it’s the most important investment of the day it should be the first one you take care of.

Charming your service providers.

We all do it, try much hard for those people we like. Now I know your florist, wedding planner and photographer are at your service but I can tell you, charming your service provides will give you the deluxe service. They will do back flips for you and you will all enjoy your wedding more. This in turn will make for good moods all round. Nothing worse than a spoilt brat bride, who believe me, all the service provides will give average service to and avoid the rest of the time. But a lady will be treated as such and we all try a little hard for those we like.

Why is wedding photography so expensive? Part 03

Popular wedding photographers are always expensive, the more popular they are the more expensive they will be. Becoming a popular photographer means they have worked on their skills for years and deliver their best year after year. This is easily checked with references. Unfortunately the old proverb stands true, “you get what you pay for”.

There is a huge responsibility placed on the shoulders of a wedding photographer. Added to this pressure is the limited time, the groom who does not want to be shot, the mother in law who wants five hundred groups, the priest who want her to stand at the back of the church and all your guests with their digital camera who keeps standing in front of her at all the important moments. It takes a special skilled person to deliver breath taking results every time, no matter what the conditions or pressure levels. And if they are this good every time, it means they work so hard at it that they have no life.

The worst mistakes you can make as a bride. – part 02

6. Over doing the tan.. especially if you man if very fair
7. Get drunk and stay up late the night before
8. Wear your shoes for the first time on your wedding day
9. Forgetting to kiss your dad when he delivers you to your future husband – this is often a very hard and emotional moment for a parent. We only find out when we have our own children just how hard. I cringe when I see a sad dad being ignored and left without a proper farewell to the past.
10. Stressing about the small stuff and not living in the moment on this your special day

So why the strict rules with meetings?

Now as we all know, practise makes perfect. So I should be practising my photographic skills, so that you will have the best wedding images every seen. If I spend my time on clients who aren’t sure I loose a lot of practise time. Already if I just see the people who book me, we are looking at over 50 meetings. Added on the second meeting and ten who don’t take me. It means I do 100 meeting in a year. Which is fine when it’s a constructive meeting but really frustrating when someone is unprepared and unconvinced.
Each and every wedding and couple are important to me and I promise you everything but try and remember it’s a balancing act.

What to do when it’s impossible to meet?

Sometimes during the summer season it’s absolutely impossible to meet. In June I shoot nearly everyday and so it can sometimes be impossible to meet. Also for international weddings outside of Italy it really becomes difficult to meet. So what can you do to help me to get to know you?

1. skype me… just as good as meeting in person really
2. write me long letters all about you
3. send me pictures of you
4. add me to facebook
5. send me pictures you love

Of course you can do all of the above even if you do get a chance to meet me.

The next stage – the meeting

Then once this chemistry has been certified and you have seen our pricelist, and you are still interested in me I am more than happy to meet. I bring along album examples and we discuss details, photography, venues, tastes, styles… and sometimes life in general. We will laugh, plan, whisper and giggle some more. But it will be a comfortable meeting with my clients prepared. Knowing which questions they want to ask. I don’t want to convince anyone to take me. If clients aren’t sure about my work then I am not the photographer for them. Most clients come to the meetings pretty sure they love the work but not sure about the nutter behind the camera. So I prefer this meeting to be about my new relationship with my client.

The chemistry phone call #2

This magic is an absolute must when it comes to making beautiful pictures. I can usually tell in the first three minutes of a chat if a bride and I are going to gel. I have recommended other photographers in the past to brides I felt were needing a different kind of photographer. If I don’t like the people I shoot, it’s hard to make special images. And if you don’t like me, well then you would be just silly hiring me. So basically we both have to feel the love.

Should you meet your photographer before your wedding?

Just last night i was kept waiting an hour and forty minutes for a bride and her wedding planner. Who arrived and made it quite obvious that she was not in the least interested in my work. Why did she waste my time? I have so precious little to spend with my son. I am not into hard sales. I am not prepared to go to a meeting to convince anyone. If you are not already 90% sure from seeing my work on line, I am not the photographer for you. Simple. Sound rude?

In the past I have make many sacrifices for my brides but now that I am older I have realised that it’s not necessary to be a slave at their beck and call. I am a person with a family and my services are not life giving. As my friend Rikkie likes to regularly remind me I am not a brain surgeon. So although I find it absolutely essential to meet a new couple before their wedding, I don’t want to waste my time or theirs. It’s enough I bond with them after they as sure they want me.

The runaway bride and groom …5 things to remember, so you can make the most it. #3

3) Create endless photo opportunities and have fun with eachother. Take the time to explore with your photographer. If you find a photographer local to the area, they will be able to guide you. Find the best little spots and views that will make all the difference to your day. A quiet walk around secret alleyways, isolated beaches, empty fields or even a glass of champagne on a lone table in a busy piazza. These are the moments that will be etched into your memories forever.

Why are good wedding photographers so expensive?

Firstly wedding photography is very difficult. Often the subjects are not models, there is loads of stress, very limited time, dynamic lighting conditions, relationships, grumpy priests, and Aunty Lucy who keeps jumping in front of us during the rings… the list is endless.

You have to be really good at a number of kinds of photography e.g. landscape, portraits, interiors, groups… you name it..

Photographers in general have quite a snobby attitude towards wedding photography. No one studying photography will admit to wanting to be a wedding photographer. Fashion, advertising etc. The best students go there and apparently the rest of us become wedding photographers. Well it turns out there are only a few really good wedding photographers out there. Serious photography lovers know that it’s worth paying for and ruin it for everybody else.

Basically a photographer can only do a few weddings every year before they start to loose chunks of hair. The limit at a max is around fifty, as nearly all weddings fall in summer. So because they get more requests than they can do they need to make themselves more expensive. It’s the old and simple supply and demand law. It’s a sad truth that the photographer who won’t give you a discount has loads of work and will fill your date anyway. This is often because they are good.

Ever been to Venice and fallen for the “tourist menu” and felt robbed. Paying a little for rubbish is expensive. Paying a lot for something which requires study and work, and which is of a supreme quality is value for money.

Your bridezilla exorcism – part 05

Exercise nine

Try stress busters like exercise, yoga, breathing exercisers, meditation and playing with children (actually playing with children is good for just about any ailment)

Exercise ten

Write your vows and read them every time you get wrapped up in the details and it isn’t going your way. You will remember the real reason for this day.

The Excitement before the Party: Why I love the “getting ready” images?

One of my absolute favourite parts of a wedding is the getting ready. There is such nervousness and excitement in the air. Giggling, panic, joy and tears flow freely as everyone rushes around to be on time. I do my best to fade into the background and capture all these fleeting moments which you will no doubt later forget because you were so nervous and preoccupied. The build up is tremendous and this gives me the energy to deal with the rush which happened the minute you step out the door.

Once we leave the room I have to get all those essential images in a very limited time frame. It’s a huge responsibility and often I can be as nervous as you. To top that off I am cursed with a sensitive soul which absorbs the emotions of others. So if you see me a little shaky do not worry, it is precisely this energy which helps me create image that I just can’t seem to create when I am bored. The anticipation of the party, although torturous can also be one of the most exciting parts of the day.

Another reason I love the getting ready images is because it gives you time to get used to me. I also have time to test out your best angles and get onto your wave length. Parents are often sceptical of this rather strangely looking photographer who seems to be shooting all the wrong things. It’s most important I get the cooperation of all the people you have around you. Therefore this is a good chance for me to make them feel a little more comfortable and assure them that their photo requests will be seen to later.

When wedding magazines request weddings to be published they are very interested in details. Details help tell the story of the months before the wedding. Months of careful planning which should be honoured with a recording of the results of this planning. So I usually start by shooting the details, especial since most of us are not looking as gorgeous as we could be in the early stages of the preparation.

Last but not least it’s a chance to do some quiet portraits just before you walk out. This is a lovely time. It is a calm moment that where you realise what is happening. You look your absolute best and just bursting with excitement. All this makes for a very beautiful portrait session. Now I can do this in fifteen minutes but the longer you give me the more images there will be. And you may not like the way you look today but believe me in twenty years time you will think you were just beautiful.

It’s likely that you will never again look as gorgeous as you do on your wedding day—so what a shame it passes by so quickly! You may have bought delicious wedding underwear that your groom will never see because you both passed out with exhaustion after your emotional day.

Take a look at the gallery to get some idea of the sizzle this option can add to your photo collection. You will notice that there are only a few photographs, and only of models. Magical Places and Spaces

At JoAnne Dunn Photography, we have the privilege of shooting weddings in some of the most beautiful places in the world. Many of our clients travel great distances and spend small fortunes to share with their loved ones their love of a particular part of the world.

To honour this commitment, we take care to carefully describe the place chosen for each and every wedding we shoot. At the end of the day, our photos will include not only gorgeous shots of your wedding, but also the surroundings—beautiful landscapes and environments, at different times of day.

Our location shots help to set your wedding in context, both in time and space. The architecture, land and sky will be portrayed so that everyone watching the photos will be cast under the same spell that first caught you.

Delightful Details

Taking a photograph of your shoes might seem rather silly today. But imagine the same image in twenty years. Ever smelt a perfume and suddenly some forgotten (and perhaps a bit naughty) memory has come rushing back? The same will happen when, in twenty years’ time, you see those shoes and remember the day you finally bought them and hid the receipt from your fiancé.

At JoAnne Dunn photography, we use photos of descriptive details from your wedding—your shoes, place cards, a ribbon or some flowers—in the same way that writers use little details to evoke a particular time, or scene. These details will help us describe a time, a mood, a feeling or a client’s taste, and they are what will transport you back in time when you look at your album in years to come.

Photos of details will give an ‘editorial’ feel to an album—exactly in the way that glossy magazines feature lots of gorgeous details in their wedding coverage. But they are also a loving homage to the many months of work you put into planning your wedding and its special themes and colours. By immortalising these details, we can unlock a flood of special memories.

Timefull Classics

Clients often tell us that they want timeless photographs. What a strange thing to request! Washing away unique time stamp images, only makes the photos weak tools for bringing back memories.

At JoAnne Dunn Photography we aim to produce ‘timefull’ images that evoke memories and capture what the people in them were like when they were taken. Photos that tell a story about the time, the location and the love shared by the wedding couple.

We know that when people ask for timeless photos, they really mean classic. But classic wedding images need not be cheesy or embarrassing, or detached from the ‘time fullness’ of your wedding day. We prefer to define a classic wedding image as a little quieter but stylish with a hint of romance. Although we still take a relaxed and natural approach to posing we may request you to kiss, or walk through a gorgeous puddle of sunshine.

Insiders Guide to the Amalfi Coast – part 02

Amalfi
literally stunning

Amalfi is a treasure crevice cut into the cool rock at the foot of the Lattari mountain range. Quietly it sparkles within, protected; it’s unimaginable what lies within. One enters through arched passageways, which open into a beautiful square. Then splashes gold light catch your eye. You look up to see what must be one of the most exquisite and impressive cathedrals in the world. Its details and outside walls are decorated with mosaic of all colours, even silver and lots of gold. Combined with sunshine, the effect is dazzling.

Every year around June, Amalfi hosts a historical boat race: The Ancient Maritime Republics Regatta. People with history and the spirit of the sea in their souls celebrate the sea. Dressed in traditional costume they perform passed on rituals under the scattering light of fireworks. Fireworks are an important tradition along the coast line and generally in south Italy. Even grown men are passionate about the fireworks.
Every town and village has a patron saint. On the saint’s scared day, a statue of the saint will go around the town on the back of a van or on the shoulders of men. Passing along the streets with noisy clanging music, children and adults alike are calling, “He is coming!” imploring you with a twinkle in their eyes. Those adults have been running into the street to see their town’s saint, ever since they were little and before. Memories flood back as they stand with tears, notes and petals to shower on the passing protector. Once all the offerings have been collected and the complimentary Saint poster has been received, fire works are set off. Loud bangs and sparks try to frighten the sunshine into lighting up. For the entire day and night the fireworks will beat the sky like a drum.

Many people have never left their Amalfi villages for very long, if at all. The dances and food, song and music are all steeped in old traditions. Traditions which have had many a passionate love affair with rogue influences. Traditions which could be accused of being just a little romantic. They are both in love with and living in their past.

Flowers flop over walls, shocking bougainvilleas and coy but testy prickly pears garnish the town. Citrus, in particular lemons are a symbol of the region. All along the coast you are making an educated choice if you choose something with lemons in it. Lemoncello, lemon sorbet, Dilizia al Lemone (a heavenly lemon desert).

If you love fish, then Amalfi is for you. (My husband loves fish the way some people love drugs.) Most of the restaurants serve fish and if you keep it simple, you can’t go wrong. It will be fresh, delicate and special. Order the house white, it’s likely to be home-made by close relatives or friends. It’s not a quiet refined wine but rather an extremely fine home-made wine. Clean, pure, light, delicious and cheap. In summer it’s advisable to throw a peach into your pitcher and even red wine is chilled. A good rule my hubby, the food worshipper, has taught me is to look for the restaurant with a shorter menu. It means things are fresh because that’s what you should be after.
I once heard Johnny Depp (in an interview) say that it is almost impossible to have a bad meal in Italy. The key is eating what is local and in season; (you payless and it tastes better) creamy juicy mozzarella , rich smoked provola, cherries, peaches, oranges, lemons, grapes, wild mushrooms, chestnuts, pasta (no cream, EVER, well hardly) raw olive oil, fish wrapped in lemon leaves, tiny fried fresh fish, simple pizza, mussels, clams and the best tomatoes you will ever eat.

I recommend two important experiences of the Amalfi coast. One from land and the other from the sea. First hire a Vespa and do the whole fifty kilometres from Sorrento to Salerno and back. Especially when it is really hot and there may be traffic, theVespa is an escape. Has to be a Vespa, it’s a tradition. If you are like me and you suffer on bendy roads the Vespa is the solution. The double-decker public buses, believe me, are not the answer. I cannot describe the joy of a Vespa! My second suggestion is to hire a boat or take a sunset cruise. To see the coast from the sea is inspiring, even from a peddle boat. On a calm day one can even dive in the immense blue sea and have a safe off shore dip.

Insiders Guide to the Amalfi Coast – part 01

Love and food;
Food for love,
For love of food;
Delicious and divine,
The Amalfi Coast naturally.

The Amalfi Coastline, from the Mediterranean Sea, seems to be a divine organic tiara. The sun’s rays catch little flashes of splendour from the minute villages which are carved into the sea’s crown. Ravello, the thirteenth jewel, perches straight above on the Lattari Mountains. The Mountains and their straight faced cliffs fall lazily down to the sea from above. From my gushiness, you can tell, I am madly in love with the Amalfi coastline and in particular Ravello. I know the little villages and their curves intimately. We are not able to visit all the villages, since our time is brief, so I’ll selfishly stick to my personal favourites. This is my “Insiders Guide” to the Amalfi coast.

Ravello
Medieval Garden Village

Have to start with Ravello! That’s where it all began. I first heard about Ravello, three years ago, in a book on a plane to Italy. The author described it’s deliciously lush gardens and dizzying views. Little did I know it was a start of a lasting love affair. I do admit that I fall in love with many places regularly. But I have to say that with Ravello it was different and seem predestined. I asked Gianni (hubby) where Ravello was, he pointed at the mountains behind our house, “twenty minutes away”. It’s difficult to decide if Ravello is a garden or a village. This Medieval village garden has a petty coat of lemon and vine terraces. The blossoms and their fall, heavy purple jewels hang from vines, the rusted leaves set the petticoat a flame and finally dissolve into a resting abstraction. Goat and sheep herds with their shepherds and tinkling bells roam the mountains. So on the way up to Ravello, one always goes up to get to Ravello, one is often slowed down my by a scampering pool of fluff and chimes. I always insist on silence in the car as we wade through.

Our first meeting was not the moment we fell in love. It was not love at first sight. I didn’t make an effort to explore very much past the piazza. We missed everything. Ravello is to be climbed and explored. It is three hundred meters above sea with the sea of Amalfi directly below it. Ravello has many stairs but each one is worth it for the views are unimaginable. It was later, when I was commissioned to do a photographic reportage on Ravello, that I saw her many faces and dresses. I woke up at four one morning to search for the best view point to shoot the sunrise. Climbing the many, many, many stairs… a light which seemed celestial. I had a moment. Empty, quiet and suspended, seemingly from the sky above the sea. Truly unbelievable and yet giving one perfect perspective. Vast and close, things seem miniature but yet immense. It’s confusing, as the eye is not used to such huge perspectives and being reminded how very small we are.

Ravello is a place of music. Old music, classical music, folk music and occasionally you might catch a few swinging jazz notes on the wind. Beautiful and prestigious classical concerts are performed in front of these overwhelming spaces. Sea, sky, clouds, mist, specs of colour and light. It is said that Villa Rufolo was Wagner’s inspiration for the gardens of Klingsor, during his visit in eighteen eighty. An enchanted garden and Parsifal is a magical piece with a little of Ravello’s soul. Every year, since the nineteen twenties, Ravello has been home to the Wagner Music Festival. It is held in the hot summer months of July. Set in the very gardens which inspired the master. The festival is a celebration of a passionate love affair of the artist and the landscape. A landscape with coloured flower wings and enchanting Arabic influenced architecture.

There are other music festivals and performances such as Jazz, Arabic, Spanish, Medieval, Folk, Opera and Classical. Ravello and its surroundings have a long concert season from March to November. (Even in midsummer, take a warm jersey. You are up in the clouds and it can get nippy). There are dawn concerts which commence with the sunrise. Ravello is at her most beautiful from four till six in summer mornings and afternoons. In the late summer evenings, on the piazza (Duomo Square), small concerts take place under the watchful gaze of the great dark pines. Music lovers and other lovers come from all over the world to see the astonishing views, drink in the sent of the flowers and take pleasure in the music.

Ravello and its surrounding mountains are inhabited by a little tribe of folk musicians and dancers. Some are classically trained and others play Jazz, but their love is for folk. The leader of musical gnomes can play and sing just about anything. Mad as a potter but thoroughly captivating. He and his fellow musicians earn a living doing concerts in Ravello for wealthy Americans and English, who come to get married. These musicians are some of the happiest humans I know. Ravello seems to have intoxicating powers and has been known to have strange effects. I once saw an extremely wealth lady in her seventies, kick of her shoes and “give” herself to the music. There are times when Ravello is particularly dangerous to self control. As different trees and fruit trees blossom and bloom in spring and early summer, they can quite confuse a restless soul. The sensation is similar to being in-love. The fact that one is at the top of a mountain looking down does something quite wonderful to the head and heart. Add a little sublime music of your choice and well it’s the perfect place to cast a love spell. No discussion of Ravello would be complete without mentioning my favourite little part of this world. The gardens, flowers, views, trees of Villa Cimbrone are unimaginable. A steep demanding little fifteen minute walk from Ravello, the villa is open everyday from nine till sunset. The Terrace of Infinity is one of Ravello’s best views. The terrace looks straight down onto a seductively curvy part of the coast. The effect is startling due to the sharp drop of the mountain the garden is on. It gives the impression that one is looking down from a window in the sky. The lemon tree terraces frill round the mountain and tiny ladybird size cars trace the contour of coast. The effect is just a little surreal.

Villa Cimbrone’s gardens are filled with sculptures, trees, flowers and various other little treasures collected by the English Nobleman who built it. The pines are tall ancient silhouettes and the castle-like villa evokes longings for fairytales. There are grand discoveries, like an oversized marble rose garden, centered with a sundial and gated with huge ceramic urns. There are also places which seem to be secret places to sit and think. Little sculptures tucked away. The bronze turning that special powdery mossy green, while giant blazing leaves float gently to the ground. The time is older up there. It is another world, with its own time, a magical time which offers another perspective. Writers and artists have been besotted Ravello’s virtues. The immense space inspires, humbles and even inflicts melancholy. The Spanish artist and ceramist Miro, the English painter Tuner and the writer Virginia Woolf are but a few of the many artists who have visited Ravello. “Room with a view”, written by Foster depicts many a Ravello scene. Even us mortals can’t help but be inspired by Ravello’s eternity. Yet it has a special naturalism as villagers go about their day. It proposes many unique vantage places to examine without and within.

Reportage’ or ‘Photojournalistic’ Wedding photography explained.

Reportage or ‘candid’ wedding photography has become hugely popular over the past ten years. It is a natural and modern photography style, whereby the photographer depicts the whole wedding as it unfolds, with minimal interference or scene manipulation.

The only rule of reportage photography is to expect the unexpected. This allows the photographer to catch the dynamic nature of a wedding—the constantly changing light, settings and events. Nothing will be missed with this intimate account of your day.

Because of its spontaneous nature, reportage photography is best shot in natural light—to the ‘purist’, even using a flash means overstepping the bounds of the genre. Many photographers also shoot their reportage images in black and white, as it can give better results in changing, or difficult light.

At JoAnne Dunn Photography, we will use whatever technique necessary to get the pictures looking amazing. In our experience, the most gorgeous reportage photos are usually shot in the moments before sunset. After that we have to get creative with flashes and tripods. We also offer to touch up your reportage images to make sure they have that magical glow you remember from the moment in which they were captured. SO because our number one goal is making you look good, we are not reportage purists.

Why do I have to pay the balance on the day?

I have couples who have still not chosen the final images five years after their wedding. Then got one got divorced and could not have cared less what I did with their wedding pictures. So once bitten twice shy and all of that. It’s also a day that couples have the money, a few months down the line couples often go through post wedding spending blues.
